But it's often the quiet studentsfeeling uncomfortable with a new culture and a new languagewho need personal attention from the teacher to empower them to participate more fully. It's important to notice who talks to whom in the community and who has the leadership for different issues in the family. Even if a teacher can't become fully immersed in the community, he or she can listen carefully to the vocabulary of the community and the ways parents talk about schooling and the classroom. While taking courses in reading assessment and diagnostic instruction, pre-service teachers implement multiple reading assessments and utilize the results of these assessments to develop an individualized program of reading instruction. Attending community gatherings and traditional events is one way to do this. My research has uncovered the nuanced ways that families support their childrens education at home and how families teach their children to balance struggle with hope.
